description

The current design, development, and qualification processes for shipboard hardware significantly hinder the Navy’s ability to modernize its warfighting capabilities in a timely and cost-effective manner. The Human-Machine Interface (HMI) display devices currently used on U.S. Navy ships, commonly referred to as “Consoles,” present several challenges. They are complex to manufacture, require extensive maintenance, generate excessive noise and heat within command-and-control spaces, and lag behind industry advancements in display technology, computing, and system architecture. Additionally, their size, weight, and footprint make installation both expensive and time-consuming.

This effort aims to develop and prototype an iterative manufacturing update process that enables the efficient production of end-item units at scale as part of the “Foundry.” The Foundry serves as the U.S. Navy Surface Force’s continuous development, integration, and production infrastructure for computing systems. Its mission is to leverage DevSecOps principles and Agile management methodologies to rapidly and continuously deliver cutting-edge technology to the Surface Navy, ensuring that fleet capabilities remain at the forefront of technological innovation.
